Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a prisoner who breaks parole from Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) after nineteen years mainly for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean goes out in the real world (France in the 1800s is the setting) where he agrees to take care of Cosette (Isabelle Allen; Amanda Seyfried as adult Cosette), the daughter of Fantine (Anne Hathaway), a struggling factory worker. Everything begins to change until the June Rebellion is about to begin.
